Irene is 20 years old and lives in the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi. When her father died, she took care of her mother and little brother when she was very young. At the age of 8 she left her mothers house to work with a family elsewhere. The little money that she earned she sent home to make sure that her brother could go to school. She is now finishing her secondary school but still works as a maid from dusk till dawn. During difficult times in her life she sings herself to sleep. Singing is her passion and her way to pray to God.
The students in Maastricht were incredibly moved by the persistence and discipline of Irene. Irene's song inspired them to make a popsong that has some gospel influences to recreate the prayer of Irene and the empowering energy that they felt in her song. They performed their composition "Pop" on 21 April in a former NATO Base in the caves of Maastricht, a spectacular place for a concert.
